Stories

Marvin was born in Junction City and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1963. He enlisted in the US Army in September of 1965, basic training at Fort Bliss and combat training in New Mexico. In 1966 the transport ship Gen. Hugh Gaffney took him on a 30 day ride to his station in Phu My, Vietnam. Marvin served as a heavy artillery mechanic with the 1st Battalion of the 44th Artillery. He worked with the Dusters and Twin-40’s, often on the perimeter of the military base or in a convoy defense capacity. Marvin never talked very much about his tour of Vietnam but he did attend many of the National Dusters, Quads and Searchlight reunions. He was always happy to visit with his fellow soldiers and talk about things. Many tears were shed at these reunions. After his tour of duty, Marvin was discharged in 1967 and returned to his job at Consolidated Papers. He married Kathleen Schill in Auburndale in 1968. He retired as a truck driver from StoraEnso in 2002 and then Marvin and Kathleen started Fireplaces Efficient, their business in the town of Rome, Marv loved being his own boss and interacting with his customers and retiring in 2011. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, camping, carpentry, cribbage, and softball. Above all else Marvin loved spending time with Kathleen, his children Paul, Keith, Dawn and Laura and their families. Marvin passed away at the age of 77 in 2022. He never complained about his illness and was brave til the very end. Marve’s service to his country continued with his son Paul, who joined the Marine Corps, his grandson Paul Jr. who served in the US Army in Kuwait and Afghanistan and Paul Jr’s wife, Karyn, still serving in the US Army. Marvin’s twin brother, Melvin, also served abroad in Korea when Marv was in Vietnam.
