Stories

Everett Varney
Everett Varney was born to Mr. and Mrs. F. Varney on the eleventh of September in the year 1896. He graduated from Greenwood High School, came to Marshfield with his parents, shortly after enlisting in Co. A., of the Second Wisconsin infantry, about three years prior to his death.

E. Varney served with Company A, Second Wisconsin infantry through the Mexican border campaign. Shortly after the war in Germany broke out, Varney attended an officer's training school and won a commission as Second Lieutenant. He was sent to France in December of 1917. He was believed to be the youngest American Officer in that country at the time. He became popularly known as the "Kid Trainer", after his appointment as instructor for the remainder of the war.

Led by General Pershing, the 3rd American Division fought the battle of Chateau Thierry, in France, to defend the bridges over the Marne. The battle was a victory, American forces, allied with French troops pushed the Germans back across the river. Owing to the casualities of the victory, Lt. Varney volunteered for the front lines under Captain Normington of the city of Marshfield. When the Captain was killed by chemical gassing, Lt. Varney took command of the Company he was leading. On October 14th, Varney received wounds in battle that would eventually lead to his death nine days later, on the 23rd of October.

The Lieutenant is spoken of as a brave soldier, and will be remembered in the hearts of his family and friends, and those of whom he fought with.
