John A. Tosch
Private John A. Tosch of Fond du Lac is remembered as a Veteran in World War I. John was born in Ogfolderhaid, Bohemia on January 14, 1896. When he turned 13, he and his family immigrated to American from France. He moved to Fond du Lac and then later moved to a farm near the Natwick Cheese Factory. He died from wounds in action somewhere in France on August 11th. His parents at the time were living on the old Charley Uhlmann place, between Pittsville and Vesper. His father got the news on a Friday by telegram. Many people knew John and he was liked very much by all. He was the first Vesper man to give up his life on the battlefields.
John decided to join the military in April and was sent to Camp Grant on May 1st, for training. He entered with John Scholten, and was assigned to Co. A, 355th Inf. He was then put into action on the French front. He and many other young men were put into the fronts much sooner that others.
Though John passed away, many still remembered him. His neighbors would speak of him and say they saw him as a great model for young men. His Mother would cry after seeing the picture of him while at Camp Grant.
