Walter Soles
Private Walter Soles lived on West Fifth Street in Marshfield. He was part of the Marshfield High School graduating class of 1914. His mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. William Soles, were heart broken when they found out the news about their son Walter. Walter Soles was killed on July 31st, 1918, while in action against the Germans in France near Sergy. He was 23 years old when he passed away.
Walter was a member of Company A of the 127th infantry. They had one main object in view, and that was to beat the Huns. So they went to work. Company A left Camp McArthur on January 21st, 1918, to go to Camp Merritt, New Jersey. They arrived in Camp Merritt January 28th. It was one of the best camps; the soldiers were treated very well there. The good news came at last that they were to sail for France. Then came the bad news, Boys who had trained together and prepared themselves together were now being split up. Because a series of mumps cut the Companies strengh down to 6 officers and 145 enlisted men, leaving 87 behind. But they had to sail regardless of the situation. They got onto U.S.S. George Washington, then on February 18th they went out to sea to do their job.
The men and women that were in World War I were all some pretty amazing people. If it weren't for their bravery the world as we know it wouldn't be the same.
