Edward Semenske
Edward Semenske died in WWI, on September 13th when he was just 23 years old. His hometown was Ausprussen, Germany. He came to America when he was only 13 years old and lived in Lannon in Waukesha County. He was killed in action on the battleground of France while with the 355th Infantry. His regiment was trying to head toward German soil. He was drafted into the Army at age 18.
Edward was in the second battle of the Marne, where Germans were trying to advance into France. The French army was in bad shape after the last battle they had and they asked the U.S. for more troops for this battle and the U.S. sent over 85,000 soldiers. The Germans pushed them back to the west where they had time to regroup and they fell apart whey they ran into another division that was ready for them. The Germans had no other choice but to retreat, and Edward Semenske helped stop the Germans and end the last attempt for the central powers to win WWI. There were more than 24 divisions of troops in this battle. The Allied Powers had 120,000 casualties and the Germans 168,000.
Edward was also in the battle of Amiens and sadly lost his life fighting for his country.
