Fred Bruderle
Fred was killed in action by a shot from a machine gun. He was in France when he was killed while serving in the Canadian forces. He grew up in Grand Rapids, where he spent the greater part of his life, living with his dad.
He was fighting in the trenches when he was killed by German forces. The trenches where he was fighting were not in very good condition. They were just like the ditches on the side of a road and soldiers sat down in them and shot back and forth at each other and it could take months for some of the trenches to be taken by one side or the other.
The weapon that Fred was killed with was a machine gun and 95 per-cent of gun related deaths were caused by the machine gun. It was the most popular weapon in the war, and the most often used weapon by all sides and countries in the war.
Fred was a part of the Canadian forces in the war. Even though he lived in the United States, he still fought for Canada and I think it was because in that battle there were small forces from Canada and the United States, but the group he was with was Canadian.
He grew up in Grand Rapids where he spent most of his life and was going to be thirty years old before he was killed in France. He was well known in Grand Rapids by almost everyone. He was a single man and lived with his dad, and had no children or brothers or sisters. He was an only child and was well liked by everyone, and everyone was sad to find out about his death, but were happy to know he died for a good cause.
