On January 6th, 1917, an American hero was born. That hero's name was Thomas J. Redmond. He was born in Rockford, Illinois and later moved to Pittsville with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Redmond, when he was nine years of age. His parents owned a farm four miles north of Pittsville; when he got older he graduated from St. Joachim's parochial school.
Before he was drafted he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and also helped on the family farm. Thomas was drafted on February 14th, 1941 when he was 24 years old and served in the army as a combat engineer. Two years later while he was in Africa he stepped on a land mine and was badly wounded and died two days later. The date was May 16th, 1943. Thank you, Thomas Redmond and your family for your service and your giving of the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
