Fidler served two years in the Pacific Theater with Battery C of the 760th Field Artillery Battalion. After action in New Guinea, his battalion sailed to Luzon Island to take part in the invasion and eventual liberation of the Philippines. Edward did not speak much of the details of war that he experienced but his son, Joe, recollected from what he did share that his dad was well liked and popular with his fellow service members. He performed a great service to them by writing letters for them that they dictated to him because many were not as proficient as he was with writing. This was a great gift to his fellow soldiers and especially their families. After his service in 1946, Edward returned home and began a 45 year career with Consolidated Papers. He married Theresa in 1957 and is remembered as a beloved father and stepfather. Edward passed away in 1989 and he is lovingly remembered and honored by his son, Joe, and stepdaughter Donna and family. They are very proud of his service.

They were called to the European Theater and the Ardennes Forest during the Battle of The Bulge in the very cold winter of 1944 and 45. They lived through attacks by the enemy and saw many fellow soldiers wounded or killed. These experiences of Robert were never far from his mind. Staff Sgt. Schelvan was honorably discharged from the 8th Infantry 4th Division after 1 year and 8 months. Returning home to his wife, Karla whom he married in 1940, they raised three daughters and a son. He spent his years thereafter as a machinist, enjoying his free time playing cribbage, watching baseball and Fri night boxing. He played the Harmonica and electric guitar perfectly which he sang along with in a beautiful perfect voice. He was loved and respected by all that had the pleasure of knowing him and was a very loving father. He unfortunately passed away with cancer at age 57. Many traveled to his funeral including a nun who worked at the hospital when he was ill and a younger coworker who traveled a great distance. Robert Schelvan is honored by his daughters Diane, Janyce, Roberta and son Kevin and nephew Bill. His legacy of military service continues on his family.

Weiler, Jerome

Honored by: Cassandra and Travis

Specialist Jerold Weiler served his country as a medic corpsman in Vietnam and Southeast Asia from August, 1969 until Aug. 1971. While serving as the head medic for the 9th Infantry Division he was wounded in action. Jerold was awarded the Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Jerold Weiler paid the ultimate sacrifice for his service in Vietnam, we lost him too soon in 2007 due to service related illness. Jerry was a sweet and generous person who lived life to the fullest and always had a joke or story to tell. He was an active member of the Disabled Veterans of America. In 1970 when Jerry was 21 he wrote a letter to the Marshfield News Herald regarding his Infantry Division’s mission into Cambodia and his experiences there as a medic. He wrote of living through several aspects of war; the fear in battle, the sorrow of losing a buddy, and the relief of knowing another day had ended. In this letter he told the readers from Wood County that he was just a boy from Auburndale putting in 24 months of his life to a country he owed so much. Today, our community is grateful for Jerold Weiler’s service and sacrifice. He is honored today by his children Cassandra and Travis.

Don Williamson

Williamson, Don

Honored by:

Donald Nash Williamson was a man of faith and service. Known as “Donnie” by his family and friends, was married to his beautiful wife, Gail Williamson, for 66 years. Born in Wisconsin Rapids and a graduate of Lincoln High School, Donnie joined the United States Air Force in 1955. During his 22-year career, he completed tours of duty at Seneca Lake, Otis, Lowry, Eielson, McClellan and Bergstrom Air Force Bases, and the Fiji Islands. He worked on the C-121 “Super Constellation” and RF-4 “Phantom” aircraft. But, for most of his career, Master Sergeant Williamson supported the US Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC), a highly-selective, national-level program to monitor global nuclear treaty compliance. As a senior AFTAC technical advisor, he completed numerous duty assignments to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Donnie retired from the US Air Force to Wisconsin Rapids in 1977. After his retirement, he often reflected on the friends he made and what an honor it was to serve our nation in the United States Air Force. A man of strong faith. He attended mass regularly at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, serving as an usher for many years. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and a founding member of the Heart of Wisconsin Amateur Radio Group. Here today honoring his life and dedicated service are his three children, Don, Mike and Kelley – along with their spouses, Julie, Otis and Steve. They, along with many family members and friends here honor and thank him for his service.
