Stories

Brave Soul

Kevin Lee Calloway was stationed with the US army in Saudi Arabia when his life came to an unforgettable end. It was a Saturday morning, the sun was bright and white, but a certain chill could be felt. The great desert sands flew past the men, telling them that they were nowhere close to home. Kevin Lee Calloway felt this way too, riding in a truck with a group of several other men. Suddenly tragedy stuck in an instant, as the truck he was riding in was suddenly struck head-on with another civilian vehicle. It will be a loss his family will feel forever.

Kevin graduated from Auburndale High School in 1988, and joined the army on August 9th, 1988 to earn money for college and to study computers. He attended basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and he worked as a truck mechanic. Before being sent to Saudi Arabia as a part of Operation Desert Storm, he was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. He was with the 623rd transportation unit, 30 miles from the Iraq border.

Kevin also is remembered as a kind, gentle person, according to many family and close friends. He used to work on a farm, and didn't even like to hit the cows to get them to stand. Kevin enjoyed walks on the country roads near his house and spending time with family and friends. The loss of Kevin and his smile will be with his loved ones forever, but knowing that he is in a better place is comforting. Kevin was a brave soul to serve a country he was willing to fight for, even though by nature, he was no fighter.
