Stories

World War 1, people said it was the war to end all wars, was fought in Europe from August 1914, to November 1918. Many of the countries used the war to promote their countries honor that had been lost in the war. America not wanting to fight in the war thought since they were in the west the war would not get to them. America was wrong, in 1917 Germany sunk an allied ship causing American casualties. In wood county George A. Schiesl choose to protect his rights from invaders.

George Schiesl was part of the 311 Supply Training. He was a private and he was deployed to France where his units were to supply the men ammo they needed. His unit wasn’t in any fights they just got supplies to the front line in the trenches. It was said that soldiers fighting in gassed areas coughed up their lungs. In no mans land there were land mines were ready for an person to step on it. Bodies filled the trenches as the fight went on. The battle fields were barren wasteland filled with dead trees and barbwire and if the enemies went through earlier dead bodies and poison gas.

On October 15 1918 George’s mother got word that he died. He had died of pneumonia an inflammatory illness of the lung. In the years before antibiotics if you got any infection you would either have to cut off your body part that is infected or you have to die. George Schiesl didn’t get it treated in time so he died. George schiesl’s body had to be shipped from France to New York to his hometown in Wisconsin in Marshfield. He did his country well by defending our rights as an American. For that he will never be forgotten.

World War 1 was a great war. It killed 37,466,904 people. Most of the deaths were caused by disease. The war also caused a global depression and it caused whole countries to shrink in size. Also the war caused woman to vote show they can do the same stuff as men.

Many fine men fought in this war. A lot of them could have been your grandfather or your father. These men defended America in a time of need and they answered the call. They were one generation of men that died so we can have freedom. They are the heart of the American army.
