World War I is know as the Great War, the First World War, and the War to End All Wars. It was fought from August 1914 to November 1918. It was a military conflict that most of the world‘s greatest powers were involved in. World War I was organized into two major alliances: the Entente Powers and the Central Powers. Over 15 million people were killed making it one of the most deadliest human conflicts in history.

Sergeant Ernest G. Miller went overseas with Company A in 1918. He was from Marshfield, Wisconsin. He was reported missing in action in France October 19th. He served with Company A through the Mexican border campaign before he went to France.

The Marshfield Times December 18, 1918 issue had a story on Mr. Miller: “Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Miller received a message from the war department last week saying that their son, Sergeant Ernest G. Miller, who went overseas with Company A of this city, was missing in action in France Oct. 15th.”

December 19th Marshfield Times reported Ernest G. Miller “was missing in action.” January 30th 1919 Marshfield Times reported “A memorial service for the late Sergeant Ernest Miller, a company A boy who made the supreme sacrifice October 15th, 1918, when he was killed in France. His memorial will be held Sunday afternoon, February 2nd.”

On August 6th 1921 the Marshfield Herald reported that: “Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Miller were advised by the government that the remains of their son. Sergeant Ernest Miller, a Company A boy who gave his life for this country in France during the world war, were expected to arrive in Hoboken, N.J.”
